Your Xbox gamertag follows you into every party, every match and every friend list, and you get only 12 characters for it. Our cool Xbox gamertag generator helps you find a name that fits, plus a styled version for Discord.
Gamertags are strict, and changing one can cost money. We focus on names that fit, how the number suffix works, and where your styled version can be used.
The Xbox Gamertag Rules
An Xbox gamertag can be up to 12 characters long. It accepts letters, numbers and spaces, and fancy Unicode letters and symbols are refused.
Gamertags do not have to be unique anymore. If someone already has your name, Xbox adds a number after it, like IronHawk#1234, which other players see in some places.
Making a Cool Gamertag in 12 Characters
Twelve characters is short, so every letter has to count. Here are the patterns we like.
Two Short Words
Two short words, like “IronHawk,” are easy to read and remember. Capital letters at the start of each word keep them clear.
A Word and a Number
A word with a number, like “Hawk77,” is short and personal. Avoid long strings of numbers, since they make the gamertag hard to say.
Spaces for Readability
Gamertags accept spaces, like “Iron Hawk.” A space makes the name easier to read, though it uses one of your 12 characters.
Changing Your Xbox Gamertag
You can change your gamertag on the Xbox website, on your console or in the Xbox app:
- Pick Your New Gamertag: Type it in the Your text box and check that it is 12 characters or fewer.
- Open Your Xbox Profile: Sign in to your Xbox profile online, or open your profile on the console.
- Choose to Change Your Gamertag: Select the option to edit or change your gamertag.
- Type and Check Availability: Enter your new gamertag and check how it will appear, including any number suffix.
- Confirm the Change: Confirm when you are happy, and note any cost before you do.
If Xbox created your gamertag for you when you signed up, your first change is free. Other changes cost money, which is why we test ideas here first.
Where Can You Use a Styled Gamertag?
Your styled gamertag works best around the console. Here is where we use it.
Discord
Discord display names accept styled text. A name like ⚔IronHawk⚔ or 𝐈𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐇𝐚𝐰𝐤 helps friends spot you in voice channels.
Streams and YouTube
Streamers use styled gamertags in channel names, titles and overlays. Keep the plain gamertag somewhere visible, so viewers can add you on Xbox.
Which Styles Fit an Xbox Gamertag?
This page opens with Gaming styles, which suit console gamers. Blades, skulls, crosshairs and shields all look sharp on a short gamertag.
For a clean look, bold or outline letters work well. They stay readable in small overlays and member lists.
Does the Same Gamertag Work in Minecraft?
Minecraft Bedrock uses your Xbox gamertag as your player name, which means the same 12 character rules apply there.
Our Minecraft Fonts Generator covers the places in Minecraft where styled text does work, like signs and books.
What Is the Smartest Gamertag Setup?
Use two short words with capital letters as your gamertag, and a blade or bold version on Discord. For player names in games that accept symbols, our Fancy Games Username Generator sorts the popular games by their rules.
