World of Warcraft gives you 2 to 12 letters and no symbols for a character name, which makes every letter count. Our WoW fancy name generator helps you pick a name that follows Blizzard’s rules, plus a styled version for your guild.
World of Warcraft is one of the strictest games for names. Character names allow only letters, with accented letters as the one bit of style you get, and we explain how to use that well.
The WoW Character Name Rules
A World of Warcraft character name must be 2 to 12 characters long. Blizzard allows accented letters, like á or ë, but numbers, spaces and symbols are not allowed.
Blizzard’s naming policy also applies to guilds and pets. Names that break it, like offensive words or names of famous characters, can be changed by Blizzard.
Should You Use Accented Letters in Your Name?
Accented letters are the only way to add style to a WoW character name. A name like Dawnbládé can look unique on your character’s nameplate.
The catch is that other players need to type your name to whisper you, invite you or add you as a friend. Accents make that much harder, and many players simply give up.
We suggest at most one accent, or none at all. Your style can live on your guild’s Discord and your roleplay profile instead.
Making a Strong WoW Name
A strong name sounds like it belongs in Azeroth. Here are the patterns we like.
Two Word Fantasy Names
Joining two fantasy words, like “Dawnblade” or “Stormveil,” sounds heroic. Just keep it within 12 letters.
Names That Fit Your Race
A name that matches your race and class adds to roleplay. Elves often get flowing names, while orcs and dwarves get shorter, harder sounds.
Short Names for Easy Whispers
Short names are easier for others to type. Six to nine letters works well for most characters.
Where Can You Use a Styled WoW Name?
Your styled name works best around the game. Here is where we use it.
Guild Discord Servers
Guilds plan raids and events on Discord. A server name like ⚜Dawnblade⚜ or 𝔇𝔞𝔴𝔫𝔟𝔩𝔞𝔡𝔢 in gothic fits the fantasy feel.
Roleplay Profiles
Roleplayers share character stories on forums and roleplay sites. A styled character name at the top of a profile sets the mood.
Streams and Videos
Streamers often show their main character’s name in titles and overlays. A styled version gives the channel a fantasy look.
Styling a Guild Name With This Tool
Here is how we put together a guild’s look outside the game:
- Type the Guild Name: Enter it in the Your text box.
- Open Fantasy Styles: This page opens with Fantasy styles, which include crowns, fleur de lis, swords, runes and dragon wings.
- Compare Gothic Letters: Tap Letter styles to see the name in gothic and bold gothic, which suit a medieval fantasy world.
- Copy and Share: Copy the final version and share it in the guild chat, so officers use the same one everywhere.
Which Styles Fit World of Warcraft?
Fantasy frames fit the game best. Royal Crown, Fleur de Lis, Knight Sword, Arcane Runes and Dragon Wings all look at home in Azeroth.
Gothic letters match the game’s medieval feel, and Bold Gothic is easier to read in a busy Discord list. We keep plain names in the game and these styles everywhere else.
How Should You Name Your Character?
Use a plain, easy to type character name in the game, and a gothic or crown version on your guild’s Discord. For Dota 2 and other Steam games, our Dota 2 Fancy Name Generator works with Steam’s more flexible names.
