Gaming name styles change a lot from one game to the next. Some games welcome symbols and fancy letters, while others refuse anything beyond plain letters and numbers.
We wrote one page for each popular game, so you can check its rules before you spend diamonds, gold or a rename card. The generator above uses gaming frames, and each game page leads with styles that suit that game.
Games That Welcome Fancy Names
Mobile battle royale games are the most relaxed. Free Fire, PUBG Mobile and BGMI accept many symbols, which is why royal brackets and crowns fill their lobbies.
Dota 2 is the other big exception. It shows your Steam profile name, which accepts most Unicode and can be changed for free at any time.
Games That Keep Names Plain
Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft and Xbox gamertags keep names to plain characters. Call of Duty, GTA Online, World of Tanks and EA SPORTS FC club names are just as strict.
World of Warcraft has the most unusual rule of all. Names can use accented letters but no numbers or symbols, and each game page explains how to work within limits like that.
How to Use a Fancy Name in a Strict Game
Strict games still leave a little room. Capital letters in a fun pattern and the classic xX frame with underscores pass in some of them.
The rest of your fancy name has a home outside the game. Discord display names, stream titles and YouTube channel names all accept styled text, so your squad can still look the part.
