Crossed out words, upside down lines and backwards text are some of the most fun ways to play with a message. Our cool text generator puts all of these effects in one place, along with letters that carry marks above or below them.
These effects are fun, but they work in a different way from normal fancy letters. We explain what each one does, and why some of them use up character limits much faster than you would expect.
What a Cool Text Generator Can Do
A cool text generator changes how your text looks by swapping, flipping or marking the letters. Some effects swap letters for lookalike characters, some reverse the order, and some add tiny marks that sit on top of each letter.
The result is still plain text to every app. You can paste c̶o̶o̶l̶ ̶t̶e̶x̶t̶ into a chat or a bio, and the effect comes along with it.
Which Cool Text Effects Can You Make?
You will find all of these under Letter styles. Here is what each family does.
Crossed Out Text
Strikethrough draws a line through each letter, while Crossed Out uses a shorter line and Slashed uses a diagonal one. People use them for jokes, edits and “not this, but that” posts.
Underlined Text
Underline, Double Underline, Wavy Underline and Dotted Underline add lines under each letter. They look like real underlines in apps that do not offer a formatting button.
Upside Down and Backwards Text
Upside Down flips each letter and reverses the order, so the line reads correctly when the phone is turned around. Backwards (Reverse) only reverses the order, which makes it look like mirror writing.
Marks Above and Below
Styles like Dot Above, Ring Above, Cross Marks Above and Radiant Sparkles add small marks to each letter. They give text a sparkly or glitchy look that stands out in a feed.
Alternating Caps
Alternating Caps switches between capital and small letters, like “cOoL tExT.” It is the classic mocking text style, and it uses only normal letters, which means it works almost everywhere.
Making Upside Down Text
Upside down text is the effect people ask about most, and it takes a few seconds:
- Type Your Line: Enter the text in the Your text box exactly as you want it to read.
- Find the Effect: Type “upside” in Filter styles… to bring the Upside Down card to the top.
- Copy the Result: Tap Copy, and the flipped text goes to your clipboard.
- Paste It In: Paste it into your chat, post or bio, and it will read normally for anyone who turns their screen around.
Why Do Cool Text Effects Use So Many Characters?
Most effects on this page add a separate mark after every letter. In technical terms, these are combining marks, and each one counts as its own character.
That means a five letter word with Strikethrough becomes ten characters. The tool marks these cards with “Adds a mark per letter” for that reason.
On a TikTok bio or a game name with a short limit, that doubling can stop you halfway through a word.
Upside down and backwards text do not have this problem. They swap or reorder letters instead of adding marks, so their length stays close to the original.
Where Cool Text Effects Work
Chats, comments, captions and bios accept these effects in almost every app. They are great for a joke, a quick edit or a single eye-catching word.
They rarely work in usernames or game names, since those fields usually allow only plain characters. Search also struggles with them, because a crossed out or upside down word does not match what people type.
Why Do Some Effects Look Messy?
Marks above and below letters depend heavily on the font of the device. On some phones, the marks line up perfectly, while on others they drift a little to the side.
If an effect looks messy on your phone, try a simpler one. Strikethrough and Underline look the most even across devices, and Alternating Caps looks the same everywhere.
Which Effect Works for Your Message?
Try Strikethrough for jokes and edits, Upside Down for a fun surprise, and Alternating Caps when you need something that works anywhere. If you want cool alphabets instead of effects, our Cool Fonts Generator focuses on those.
